PCOS Awareness Month

I had a great time on the farm this past weekend. It was exactly what my soul needed, but I'll post more on that tomorrow. Today, I want to do my first PCOS awareness post of the month!

September is PCOS awareness month. PCOS stands for Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome. It's a range of symptoms that affect each of us differently. Including but not limited to irregular menstrual cycles, regular menstrual cycles without ovulation, insulin resistance; infertility, acne, sometimes actual cysts on the ovaries. Tiredness, moodiness, hard to lose weight, hair loss, or over growth of hair.

I was officially diagnosed with PCOS in April 2013. I had long since suspected I had it, as being in the health care field at the time, information was more readily available to me. I spent the 2 years prior to the pouring over websites and books trying to figure out why it was taking so long for the Man & I to conceive. After those two years were up, I couldn't take it anymore. I needed answers. Off to the endocrinologists we went. It didn't take her very long to diagnose me as I had a lot of the symptoms. In that moment, for me, it was more validating then devastating. In that moment, I had an answer and a way to fight back. (Or so I thought, but that's a different story for a different day.)

After being diagnosed I slowly started to tell family and friends. I read through blog posts and visited PCOS Diva and PCOS diet support. Connected on social media with other "cystsers". I do what I can to help education the public about this condition. I thank you for taking the time to read my message and to learn more about it yourself.

There are a few ways you can also help raise awareness. Share this blog post, read books about the condition, talk to a doctor--preferrably a specialist who knows. They're are great podcasts and websites out there such as Better By Dr Brooke (or her website). PCOS Diva, PCOS Diet Support, PCOS Challenge
