Over the weekend we finally watched Hidden Figures. What a great movie. It would be obvious to point out that our nations history is riddled with racism and discrimination. It both saddens and frightens me that this continues to be "a thing" in some parts of our country.
I stopped and really thought about these women and what they meant to changing the shape of our country. With humility and strength they were able to create a little less of a divide. Disclaimer I did not read the book, everything I say is based off the movie, (I honestly, didn't know it was even a book!)
First is Katherine Johnson
Katherine was having to run a half mile in heels both ways, just to use the bathroom because they still had segregated bathrooms.
Mary Jackson was determined to become an engineer. Nothing was going to stand in her way. Even an all white school to help her advance in her career field. The strength it must have taken to walk up to the judge and ask to become "the first" at something. Can yo image the pounding in her chest? The shaky knees? My head would be spinning just thinking about going before a judge to ask for a higher education opportunity.
If she hadn't have made that step to fight for her dream, she might not have ever advanced. She seized her moment.
Dorothy Vaughan refusing to leave her team behind when computers, the size of a room, started to make their jobs obsolete, she decided to learn how to fix the computer.
I could take a page from these girls books. Look to always seek out more knowledge. Stand up for myself. Mostly importantly though, love others.
