Exercise Tuesday: Eating Before a Workout

I missed another gym session today...and yesterday. I was actually ready to go this morning, but I woke up late. If I wake up late, it means I take my thyroid medicine late...which due to how thyroid medicine works, means that you have to wait at minimum a half hour to work out but a longer wait time is recommended.
Normally this would have been fine, but I'm out of the egg white protein bars...meaning I had no backup plan for breakfast. I'm one of those eat on the way kind of morning people.
Also note, that when taking thyroid medication you cannot have a calcium supplement or food that is high in calcium within 4 hours of taking said medication. This means, no protein powder for breakfast.

It's math in the morning, which is never fun.

A quick google search revealed a credible source citing the many reasons why you should MOST DEFINITELY eat before working out.

Good ol' refreshing Jillian Michaels.

Jillian Michaels states that you should ALWAYS eat something before exercising. The main reason being that the body needs a certain amount of sugar for your training or workout. When you don't have the available sugar your body will convert your own muscle tissue into energy. Check out her site for the result of a study that was done on a group of cyclists who ate before they trained versus those who fasted.

Our bodies also needs energy to perform at a high intensity! If you don't eat before your workout, more than likely once it's time to really push the weights around or dig deep into a mile, you'll just end up feeling lethargic and unmotivated. "You won't have the strength, speed, or stamina to burn (those) calories and speed up your results because you'll likely suffer from low blood sugar, which will make you dizzy and sluggish."
Jillian also recommends eating 45 minutes to an 1 hour before a training session, so you have time to digest your food and not get stomach cramps.

So whether you workout at night or in the morning, it's always important to eat before hand. Tonight's goal...get to bed on time so I can hit the gym tomorrow morning for a full body lift session.

Blessings Everyone,
A
